Disruptive innovation

Disruptive innovation and technologies, very often at first seem of little interest.  But if pursued, can lead to existing products and services being forced to rethink their existence!

A recent example would be the emergence of Internet Retailing, where many traditional retailers are still bruised.

Often, these innovations and breakthroughs are not born in large corporations.  This is because large organizations are frequently designed to be comfortable with sustaining technologies.  They know their markets and want to capitalize on that knowledge.  They don't want to be distracted by risky "could-be's".

However, because of the massive and rapid changes the Internet brought about in the late 90s, companies are getting impatient with the Kaizen approach of continuous improvement, and now look for "breakthrough opportunities" that enable them to leapfrog competitors.
